Taking A Break

I’ve taken 2 days off work since I started at my job 9 months ago. This is for a few reasons. First, I like to keep busy, and going to work everyday keeps me grounded. Second, I don’t like taking vacation when I start a new job so that I can prove that I’m a hard worker. Finally, I know that the short days and cold temperature of the winter is the perfect time to get away - and wanted to ‘save up’ my vacation days until now.

I woke up last Friday, and reached a tipping point. All this non-stop work, and the beginning of winter made me realize that I need to get out of here for a while. I am confident that I’ve proven myself to be useful to my company, and so felt no guilt asking my boss for time off. With the snowpocalypse hitting NYC today, the decision to take a break couldn’t have come at a better time.

I’ll be traveling to a place (or places) close to the equator for 2 weeks next month. I have a few ideas of where to go, but haven’t booked a flight yet. I’m undecided if I’ll be country hopping, or doing a mini mini-life. My goal is to cram in a lot of fun activities, eat a lot of good food, and get some rest in between everything. Depending on how much downtime I have I may either try and learn something new, or work on a side project.

All of my travels so far have been in-between jobs, and haven’t really had a hard return date. I’m curious to see what it will be like to do a short burst of time-capped travel like this. Will it force me to do more planning? Will I travel faster than normal to cram more things in, or slower than normal so I can unwind from work? What will it be like going right back to work afterwards?

I'm excited to see how this all plays out. More to come!
